Ceramic Sculpture: Brainstorming and Sketching
This assignment was a little hard for me because I have never really created non-representational 3D pieces and the only experience with clay I've had was the 6 cup project that we are only halfway finished with! Can you hear my stress? Anyway, here goes.....
We had to choose 6 pieces that inspired us and we had to tell how we were going to use them in our pieces.
Here are the requirements for Form #1
As I said, this was hard for me. The first sculpture was supposed to be curvilinear so I just thought of a rounded blob shape with nodules and leg like attachments to raise it off of the ground. It reminded me of a diseased kidney. I did not want to create a piece about that so I thought of other organs that could represent. So I thought of the heart. The title of this piece is "The Heart as a Creature".
For Sculpture #2, it had to be geometric. I hate geometric. So I thought of the most basic shape, the square, and replicated the shape. I have a shape in the center with my birthstone color and four shapes surrounding it with colors for their birthstones.
I plan to make as many squares cut into the sides as possible to let light in and create shadows for dramatic effects.
For sculpture #3, we were required to combine organic shapes and geometric shapes. I started out with a very basic shape, the circle. It reminded me of an eyeball. One of the inspiration photos has open triangles pointing upward. I am using this repeating pattern on the top which looks like eyelashes. Now I just needed to find some way to fit it in with my heart theme and make it look not so much like an eye. This piece is called "The Heart Wants, What the Heart Wants".
The last sculpture is for the wall. I loved the look of my inspirational photo in which the shape is a circle and the edges have indentations. I plan to transfer the image of the heart onto the plate, break the plate, and use wire to sew it back together. I call this piece "The Heart Breaks, the Heart Heals".
