Project 2, Part C Scaling Up a Maquette Sculpture

Final-Progress

“The Heart Wants What the Heart Wants” is the design I chose from my 3 small sculptures and/or tile.  I think it was the most successful piece of the four because of the triangular lines that make your eye follow toward the center and out again and are juxtaposed with the organic shape of the heart.  It combines geometric with organic.  It has a 12” tall rectangular base, a hollowed-out organic ball or heart shape, and 5 stylized triangles on top to funnel all of the love that pours down.  I chose to create the triangles a little differently than the maquette.  I created them so that the lines of the top edges do not meet up and add more visual interest and depth and emphasis that this is an implied action that is happening.  After cutting out and assembling the individual pieces, I assembled all of the pieces and let it get bone dry.  After the bisque fire, I painted it with majolica and used a red stain center organic piece that represents my heart.  I kept the triangles mostly white with red and black stain dripping down them and inside the tops.  I used a scruffy paintbrush to apply small amounts of red and black stain around all of the parts of this piece to emphasize the ‘used’ condition of my heart.  It is reaching toward the sky, trying as hard as it can to funnel all of the love around it.
